Duryea Recycling Ordinance 2008-4

To Business Owners and Commercial Establishments,

Since 1988, Duryea Borough has voluntarily recycled various materials from residential properties and small businesses that have wanted to participate in our recycling program. Through the years, our recycling program has become more efficient and as a result, Duryea Borough has received over $10,000.00 for our annual recycling performance grant. Once a borough has a population over 5000 residents or receives over $10,000.00 for a recycling performance grant, the municipality is mandated to recycle from residential and commercial properties.

In an effort to comply with Act 101 of the Department of Environmental Resources regulations, Duryea Borough Council adopted “The Duryea Borough Recycling Ordinance” on May 13, 2008. The ordinance requires the reduction of municipal waste by the establishment of a mandatory recycling program for all homes and businesses. As per Section 6 of the recycling ordinance, the designated commercial recycling materials are high-grade office paper, corrugated paper and aluminum. Your business must hire a private hauler or Duryea Borough will collect specific recycle materials from your business based on your needs. Duryea Borough also collects glass, plastic, aluminum and steel cans, newspaper, telephone books, and magazines curbside every two weeks. All commercial establishments must submit a recycling report of the total tons recycled by their private hauler no later than January 31st of each year.

To arrange a meeting to discuss your recycling needs and our ability to assist you with meeting them, please contact Borough Manager and Recycling Coordinator Carolyn Santee at 655-2829. Enclosed is a copy of the Duryea Borough Recycling Ordinance. Thank you for your cooperation and I hope to hear from you soon. We are convinced that your recycling efforts will improve the environment and community.
