DURYEA
BOROUGH RECEIVES RECYCLING GRANT
Duryea Borough has
received a recycling performance grant for year 2008
in the amount of $19,711.00. The grant is based on
the tonnage of recyclables that Duryea Borough
collects from residents and businesses. In an effort
to comply with Act 101 of the Department of
Environmental Resources regulations, Duryea Borough
Council adopted an ordinance in 2008 establishing a
mandatory recycling program for all homes and
businesses. Duryea Borough had a voluntary recycling
program since 1988 and was one of the first boroughs
to receive a recycling truck and recycling
containers through the Department of Environmental
Resources grant program. Duryea received $16,771.00
for the year 2007 for 333.2 tons of recyclables. In
2008, Duryea residents recycled 175.3 tons of mixed
paper and 191.18 of commingled recyclables for a
total of 366.48 tons. Businesses recycled 718.2 tons
of recyclables. Duryea Borough would like to thank
all the residents and businesses for their efforts
to recycle and reduce the amount of municipal waste
going to the landfill. Duryea residents presently
recycles aluminum cans, steel cans, glass bottles,
plastic bottles, newspaper, telephone books, and

Duryea Borough Council
would like to thank Duryea residents for their
patience and understanding during the recent severe
weather conditions. The Duryea Borough street
department was fully equipped to handle the snow
with four snowplows. However, during the first
snowstorm, two of the borough dump trucks had
transmission breakdowns and a third truck broke the
frame. Independent contractors were called but only
one was available when needed. Although the street
department had prepared for the snow and ice storms,
mechanical difficulties with the vehicles cannot be
foreseen. During the month of January, the Duryea
street department used 212 tons of salt costing
$12,528.00. The borough usually uses 125 ton for the
entire winter season. The continuous ice and
snowstorms along with extreme cold temperatures
created hazardous road conditions that were
difficult to maintain. |
